Touch | The perfect sport for all ages!

Overview

Touch Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the country with over 25,000 people playing regularly nationwide.
Touch can be played by all genders, skill and ages alike, making it one of, if not the most inclusive sport in the world. While it is most commonly thought of as a ‘warm up’ game for Rugby, Touch has its own governing body as well as a World Cup and has now established itself firmly both here in the UK as a sport and across Europe in its own right.
2018 will see England host the European Touch Championships, and 18 countries have confirmed their participation, more countries than compete in the Rugby World Cup!
England Touch is currently working on getting more younger players involved in the sport starting at the basic level and going all the way through to international representation. There are several pathways that aids this progression, from schools programmes through to club competitions and regional representative teams.

Junior Touch League

Manchester Chargers and Fully Charged Events are proud to announce a new league for 2018 that is solely aimed at Juniors aged 11 – 16.
On Wednesday afternoons for six weeks between May 2nd and June 6th there will be a league format for 11-16 year old teams for boys and girls. Unlike other forms of Rugby, Touch can be played by all ages, so these teams are open to all players aged 16 and under, not just the one age group.

2018 Team Entries – Now Open

Date: 2nd May – 6th June
Entry Fee: We have set an entry price at just £150 (just £2.50 per player, per week for a team of 10).
Venue: Burnage RFC (Varley Park, Battersea Rd, Stockport SK4 3EA)
Divisions: Mixed Teams.

This league will aid the development of younger players and can further the progression of those who take part from school. The league will offer qualified coaches and referees who will help players out by offering tips in the game to further their progression.

Individuals – Looking for a team
Individuals are also very welcome to enter and we can find you a team to play in for the season.

If you don’t have a team, then NO PROBLEM as we are always happy to to put individuals into a ‘Barbarians’ team. All you need to do is to fill in this form and we will get you up and running in no time!
The League is designed to develop young players and allow them to develop in a safe environment. For those interested this is a great beginning to the Regional and National Selection pathways.

2016 Summer League – Finals Night

An excellent finals night in Manchester on Wednesday 29th July.
Both divisions have seen some excellent displays of Touch in the past 10 weeks and both divisions went down to the very last game of the season to decide the winner!

~• Super Six •~

It was decided that it would be a ‘winner takes all’ final, a great intense game with both sides having seasoned professionals playing. It was the mixture of youth and experience of the Hit and Run team that edged their 8-6 win in a climactic finalè.
Winners – Hit n’ Run
Runners up – 2 Fresh

~• Division One •~

10 teams took to the fields with a range of background from rugby players to solicitor firms and from groups of friends/colleagues to corporate sponsored teams.
The penultimate game saw Havas Lynx lose to a well drilled Oldham Rufc side, which put pressure on 2nd in the table, Ganked, who had to win their final game to be in with a chance of their title hopes.
A strong Ganked team went on to beat Bees and it was a tense few minutes as the officials counted up the for/against scores. But some big scoring early season games set Ganked in good stead to clinch the title!
Winners – Ganked
Runners up – Havas Lynx

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone involved in making it such a huge success. All 16 teams (and their organisers!), the referees, the club and staff and all of the back room staff who’ve helped along the way.
Hope to see you all again soon as we run our late summer ‘Manchester Mayhem’ league starting on July 20th.
Keep up to date on social media too

Manchester Touch Championships

img_1872.jpg

The 2016 touch season got off to an excellent start with the 7th and biggest ever Annual Manchester Touch Championships held at Audenshawe High School on Saturday. Manchester is well known for its wet weather, and this year’s tournament was no exception, with most pitches resembling a mud bath by the end of the day. But this didn’t dampen spirits and a record number of 38 teams competing across 4 divisions, showcased the best in British and Irish Touch talent.

The Men’s division was hotly contested, with Manchester Chargers, ShimmyWorldWide and the Oldies fighting it out for the first trophy of the season. It was too close to call for most of the day, but in the end ShimmyWorldWide came out on top, beating Manchester Chargers 4-0 in the final.

The Women’s division was also definitely not short in the talent department, with international teams and international players throughout, all 5 teams giving their all. Galaxy went on to take home the silverware topping the women’s league.

With the addition of Men’s and Women’s Touch Cup Tournaments to the 2016 Touch season in May, it will be an exciting year for the both the Men’s and Women’s game, and if the Manchester Championships are anything to go by, these will definitely be one not to miss!

The open mixed division did not disappoint, as Cardiff Raptors topped the table with a 3-2 win over the Bandits to secure their silverware.

The Steeden DTS tournament, now starting its third year, has been a very welcome addition to the Touch calendar and become a hotbed for developing talent in the game. The first round of the 2016 season started as we hope to go on, with a record number of 16 teams competing.

The tournament reached a climax when the final between Chester Cheetahs and Oakmeadians went to a very tense drop off, with the Cheetahs finally getting one of over the line to win 3-2.

FullSizeRender (2)Thanks also to Ryan Jennings and to Audenshawe School and pupils for excellent facilities and assistance in the day, the boys were a credit to you and the school.

And, there is no game without referees, so a massive thank you to our referees who ALL did a stirling job in the adverse conditions! Alice Watchorn, Aubrey Collins, Dan Harrison, Dan Twist, Duncan Smart, Gareth Hinds, John Knox, John O’Mahony, Kevin Hill, Lani Baird, Mike Green, Nick Richardson, Nicolas Van de Rijt, Phil Leeks, Rachel Howe, Sana Tansey, Shane Hills, Uma Ramaswami, Vicki Offland, Zack Romanu.

Also to Matthew Walker for keeping the referees in check and on time, great job and look forward to you being more involved going forward. Thanks to Matt Reid and Kevin Hobbs for the coaching support they provided too.

Finally, thank you to all the players who made the journey to Manchester and braved the mud baths! We wish you all good luck for the rest of the season and hope to see you in Manchester again soon.
